Residents of 19 states in the West and Midwest can score a $150 bonus by opening a checking account at Bank of the West.
The offer — available until March 8 — is good for both the Easy Checking and Choice Interest Checking accounts, but the latter isn’t worth your trouble.
Interest rates are negligible and requirements are tougher to avoid monthly fees.
You need to take several steps to get the full bonus on the Easy Checking account:
- Open an account with a $100 minimum deposit.
- Sign up for a recurring direct deposit of at least $250 each month. The direct deposit must be of your payroll, Social Security, pension or other government benefit check. The deposit must post by May 31, and you’ll get the first $100 of the bonus by June 28.
- To get the other $50, you’ll have to use your debit card for at least 10 debit card transactions for at least two months after the account is opened. Those purchases also must be completed by May 31. The bonuses will be credited to your account by June 28.
With the Easy Checking account, you can avoid a monthly fee simply by having the $250 direct deposit or making 10 debit card transactions — and you need those anyway to earn the bonuses.
The other way to avoid fees is to keep an average $1,000 balance in your account.
If you don’t do any of those things, you’ll pay an $8 fee if you have eStatements or a $10 fee if you receive paper statements.
You can open an account online or at a branch.
Bank of the West is based in San Francisco and has more than 650 branches in 19 states, a list of which is available on the bank’s website.
