American Airlines Card Offers Big Bonus

You'll earn a free flight after spending $1,000 in the first three months. If you could earn a free airline ticket good for one trip in the U.S., Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean just for spending a little over $300 a month on your credit card for three months, would you do it?

That’s the deal Citibank and American Airlines are offering with their Citi Platinum Select/AAdvantage Card.

You get 30,000 bonus miles for spending $1,000 on the card in the first three months.

Indeed, as airline cards go, this is one of the best deals for the money, especially when you consider that the $95 annual fee is waived the first year.

And if you fly frequently on American or spend a lot on the card, the annual fee will pay for itself.

Here’s a look at the credit card details:

APR 15.24% variable on purchases, balance transfers and cash advances

Annual Fee $95, but waived the first year
Rewards One mile per dollar on purchases, double miles on American Airlines purchases; 10% bonus miles each year; 30,000 bonus miles for spending $1,000 in first three months.
Verdict For the money, this is one of the best airline miles cards around.

In addition to the bonus intro miles, you earn two AAdvantage miles for every dollar you spend on American Airlines purchases, one mile per dollar on all other purchases.

You get a 10% bonus on the miles you redeem each year, up to 10,000 miles each calendar year.

For example, if you book a 50,000-mile round-trip flight, you’ll get 5,000 bonus miles on top of the 100,000 miles you’ll earn for booking the flight.

In addition, once you sign up, you get one free checked bag for yourself and up to four other people traveling with you. For a family of four traveling together with four checked bags, that could save you as much as $200.

Plus you get 25% off on in-flight food and beverage purchases and headsets when you use the card, as well as priority boarding.

And there’s no annual mileage cap.

The variable APR for purchases is a reasonable 15.24%.
