AloStar Pays More On 12-Month CDs, Moves To Top Of CD Rates Leaderboard

The online bank based in Birmingham, Ala., has raised its 1-year CD rate to 1.21% APY from 1.18% APY, a week after it cut its rate by nearly a tenth of a percentage point.

The increase is enough to knock Sallie Mae out of the top spot on our CD Rates Leaderboard.

AloStar ( offers this CD rate with a minimum deposit of $1,000.

This rate change marks the latest move in what has been a tumultuous two weeks for the best nationally available certificates of deposit in the term.

Since Aug. 23 there have been 10 rate changes among banks offering the top 12-month CD rates.

Most of those changes — it’s sad to say — have been cuts, including a trim of a hundredth of a percentage point today by Aurora Bank (, which now pays 1.14% on its 1-year CD.

After AloStar, the other banks offering top returns are:

Sallie Mae Bank (, the online bank of the big student loan company, which pays 1.20% APY and has no minimum balance requirements.

MainStreet Bank, a northern Virginia bank that sells its CDs nationally through its airbanking website (, which pays 1.16% APY and requires a $500 minimum deposit.

Virtual Bank (, the online division of Miami-based Sabadell United Bank, which pays 1.16% APY and requires a $10,000 minimum deposit.

    All of these rates are still available, except for Virtual Bank’s, which has dropped to 0.90% APY.

    Joining VirtualBank with lower rates: AloStar’s now is 1.15% APY. And Aurora Bank’s is 1.136% APY.
