Alabama Deal On Super Saver Account

Tuscaloosa Credit Union pays 1.21% with a $10,000 minimum depositIf you have $10,000 or more to invest, you can take advantage of good savings account rates at Tuscaloosa Credit Union.

The credit union with three branches in Tuscaloosa County — home of the University of Alabama — pays 1.21% APY on its Super Saver account.

That beats the top nationally available savings account by five hundredths of a percentage point.

SFGI Direct pays 1.16% APY with a minimum deposit of $500. SFGI Direct (www.sfgidirect) is the online division of Summit Community Bank of Moorefield, W.Va.

The money market accounts offered by AmTrust Direct (www.amtrustdirect.com) and My Banking Direct (www.mybankingdirect.com), both owned by New York Community Bank, pay a slightly better 1.25% APY.

You’ll earn AmTrust’s best rate with a deposit of $10,000 to $149,000. My Banking Direct pays its top rate with a deposit of $5,000 or more.

The Super Saver account at Tuscaloosa Credit Union (www.tuscaloosacu.com) requires a minimum deposit of $10,000.

If you can’t invest that much, a regular share account pays 0.75% APY, which is still far above the 0.17% APY national average for savings and money market accounts. (You’ll also earn this rate if your Super Saver balance drops under $10,000.)

The regular savings account requires a $25 deposit.

But you must be a credit union member to open an account, and you must live or work in Tuscaloosa County to be eligible to join Tuscaloosa Credit Union.

Tuscaloosa CU’s, AMTrust’s and My Banking Direct’s rates are still available. (SFGI’s rate has dropped to 1.11% APY and it’s not accepting new accounts.)

Add Tuscaloosa CU to the list of those who’ve dropped savings rates. It’s 1.00 APY now.
