Verdict This card is competitive with the best cash-back rewards cards, plus there’s an excellent purchase protection plan.

You earn a full 5%, or five points per dollar, on all your purchases during the first six months you have the card.

After that you earn 3% back on travel purchases, which includes airline tickets, car rentals, cruises, hotels, passenger railways and travel agencies.

So this is a good card for people who travel.

You earn 1%, or one point, on all other purchases, which is pretty standard for cash-back credit cards.

Points can be redeemed for cash, gift cards or statement credits, or you can use them to pay your AARP membership.

There’s no maximum on the number of points that you can earn in the program.

In addition to the cash-back rewards, there’s a 0% interest rate on all purchases and balance transfers for the first year. After that, the APR is as low as 13.24%, if you qualify for the best rate, 19.24% if you have weak or average credit.

The balance transfer fee is a modest 3%.

The card also comes with a very good price and purchase protection plan.

If you bought an item and find it advertised somewhere else for less within 60 days, you can get a refund for the difference for up to $250.

If your item is stolen or damaged within 60 days of purchase, you can be reimbursed up to $250.

If you want to return an item and the store won’t take it back, you can be reimbursed up to $250 for eligible returns within the first 60 days after purchase.

In addition, your purchases are covered by an extended protection plan that doubles your repair period under the manufacturer’s warranty, up to one additional year.

If you apply for this card, be prepared to provide proof of your AARP membership. The online credit card application asks for your membership number.

Some websites suggest you can get this card without an AARP membership by leaving the line blank on the form. We have not tested this.

Your safest bet is to join AARP prior to applying for this credit card. AARP membership is $16 a year. (You get a discount if you pay for multiple years when signing up.)
