A $5,000 Credit Card Bonus? Believe It

We’ve written extensively about credit card bonuses recently, and while a few cards offer a hundred bucks here or a good balance transfer there, no amazing deal has stood out.

British Airways Visa Signature Card offers up to 100,000 bonus milesThat was, of course, until Chase launched the British Airways Visa Signature Card, which offers the attractive possibility of earning 100,000 bonus miles.

So how do you get the 100,000 miles?

It’s actually quite simple. You earn 50,000 miles after your first purchase and another 50,000 after you spend $2,500 during the first three months.

You can spend that bonus on:

  • Two round-trip, economy class transatlantic flights to a Europe Zone 1 location. Zone 1 includes Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
  • Domestic flights on American Airlines, a partner of British Airways. The number of flights you would be able to redeem would depend on where and when you’re flying, but you should be able to get at least two trips out of it.
  • One round-trip flight in business class to any Europe Zone 1 location. This is where you save the big money.

Even though your miles pay for your flight, you are still responsible for the taxes.

The first two options will save you about $1,500 a piece. The third option, however, can save you more than $5,000, as round-trip business class fare from California to Europe can run more than $6,000.

The BA Visa Card also includes 2.5 miles for every dollar you spend on British Airways flights and 1 mile for every other dollar spent.

When using this card abroad, there are no foreign transaction fees, which will save you even more.

There is a $95 annual fee, but if you spend $30,000 each year, a free companion ticket is included, which pays for the fee and more. The card also charges a variable 14.24% APR (prime plus 10.99%).

I applied for this card last week — it’s such an amazing deal.

One awesome thing to note: Balance transfers are eligible as the $2,500 transaction needed to obtain the second 50,000 miles. But since the card doesn’t carry the lowest APR, I’m not transferring any more over than necessary and plan to make paying off the balance top priority.
