6-Month CD Rates Top Out At 1.17% APY

The lead in 6-month CD rates has fallen to Aurora Bank, which is paying 1.17% APY with a minimum deposit of $1,000.

Three other banks that have shared the top spot over the past 10 days – Ascencia, NewDominion and Tri-State Capital – have lowered their rates and dropped down in the rankings. The lead in 6-month CD rates has fallen to Aurora Bank, which requires a minimum deposit of $1,000.

That’s left Aurora, with offices in Wilmington, Del., and Jersey City, N.J., with the best nationally available rate on 6-month certificates of deposit.

At this time last year, you could still earn 2% on the top-paying 6-month CDs. But those deals were gone by early November and the best returns are now threatening to fall below 1% by early winter if this trend continues.

The second best nationally available rate is 1.15% APY with a minimum deposit of $3,000 from NewDominion Bank, which has branches in Charlotte and Moorseville, N.C.

Three banks are paying 1.11% APY:

Virtual Bank, the online division of Lydian Private Bank in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., with a $10,000 minimum deposit

Goldwater Bank, with a single location in Scottsdale, Ariz., and a minimum deposit of $10,000.

Ascencia, the online division of PBI Bank in Louisville, Ky., with a minimum deposit of $500.

All of these banks allow savers across the country to buy CDs over the Internet.
