3-Year CD Rates Are July’s Best At Chase

Chase Bank is sticking with the 36-month CD special it introduced last fall.

That’s fortunate because it’s the only above-average CD rate you’ll find at the nation’s largest bank (at least by assets).

Chase is paying 0.75% APY on its 3-year CDs that are special because they require purchasers to invest at least $10,000 and have a checking account at the bank.

But let’s be frank. There’s really no reason to buy a certificate of deposit at Chase unless you bank there and value the convenience.

Although this special beats the average annual yield of 0.67% offered by large banks and thrifts on 36-month CDs, it’s only half as much as you can earn from the top nationally available deal on our CD Rates Leaderboard.

Chase’s 60-month CD special was above average until it was cut to 1.01% APY from 1.10% APY in March and 1.25% APY in September.

That dropped it below the current average return of 1.10% and to about half the best nationally available 60-month CD rate of 1.91% APY.

The standard CD rates Chase quotes require a lower $1,000 minimum deposit and a checking account. Its:

6-month CD rate is 0.20% APY, matching the average rate. (The top nationally available return on our Leaderboard is 0.90% APY.)

12-month CD rate is 0.25% APY versus the average rate of 0.32% APY. (The top rate on our Leaderboard is 1.15% APY.)

24-month CD rate is 0.40% APY versus the average rate of 0.50% APY. (The top rate on our Leaderboard is 1.25% APY.)

36-month CD rate is 0.50% APY versus the average rate of 0.67% APY. (The top rate on our Leaderboard is 1.50% APY.)

Like most big banks, Chase’s website asks you to put in your ZIP code to find rates specific to your geographic area. For this post, I checked ZIP codes in California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan and New York.

To buy a Chase CD, you need to live in a state where Chase has one of more than 2,500 branches.

You can learn more about Chase at www.chase.com or call 877-242-7372.

There are definitely better deals out there, and you’ll find them if you compare Chase’s returns with the best CD rates from scores of other banks in our extensive database.
