3-Month CD Rates: Same Except The Name

AloStar Bank of Commerce has the top nationally available 3-month CD rates.There’s a new name on top when it comes to 3-month CD rates.

It’s not a new leader, just a new bank.

In April, federal regulators seized Nexity Bank and turned it over to new owners, AloStar Bank of Commerce.

After a bit of a transition, AloStar recently dropped the Nexity name from its website ( or

So will we.

And so AloStar, the online bank based in Birmingham, Ala., is the “new” leader in nationally available 3-month CD rates, offering the same 0.81% APY with a $1,000 minimum deposit it’s advertised since early May.

Hudson City Savings and Virtual Bank are still tied for second best rate of 0.75% APY.

Hudson City Savings (, which has 130 branches in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut, requires a $500 minimum deposit for anyone living in that tri-state area, but a $5,000 minimum deposit for everyone else.

Virtual Bank (, the online division of Lydian Private Bank, based in Palm Beach, Fla., requires a $10,000 minimum deposit.

Two other banks we’re tracking for our CD Rates Leaderboard that have rates worth mentioning:

  • 0.70% APY at OneWest Bank (, which has 82 branches in southern California and requires a $1,000 minimum deposit.
  • 0.60% APY at Sanibel Captiva Community Bank (, which has three branches in southwest Florida and requires a $1,000 minimum deposit.

The average annual yield large banks and thrifts for 3-month CDs is now 0.17%.
