Banco Popular $125 Checking Account Offer

Banco Popular has a bank deal where you can get up to $125 bonus and a free pair of binoculars for signing up for their Totally Free Checking Account.

The bonus levels are tiered so that you get $25 for turning in your old checks and debit card, $50 for adding direct deposit, and another $50 for signing up for online bill pay.

In addition, everyone who signs up gets a free pair on binoculars.

I’d say this deal is lukewarm unless if you were planning on opening a Banco Popular checking account anyway. Either way, if you sign up, please post a comment to let us know your experiences with them!

On a side note, I wanted to mention that the Citi Professional signup bonus has been upped to $150 (from $100) thanks to a credit card application sign-up trick that Bankaholic reader tomfox discovered.

    This offer is only for NJ and NY customers. I went into my CA branch today and I was denied.

    I opened this checking account and fulfilled all of the conditions of the promotion. I received the $25 for surrendering old bank materials; the $50 for direct deposit; but not the $50 for performing my electronic bill pay transactions. I have written a letter to the bank, and I have spoken with a bank rep on the phone about my last $50. I was promised an investigation and a callback, but this has not occurred. I may need to call again or visit the branch in person a few times before I can claim my $50 as promised.

    I find that Banco Popular has difficulty honoring this promotion completely.

    I have a CD in E LOAN which is owned by Banco Popular, however with only a 2 star E Loan bank rating, I am growing concerned they might fail and thus take me long time to receive a refund from the F.D.I.C. Maybe it is time for me to head for safer waters (a 4 or 5 star rated bank) until this banking crisis is past, even if the interest rates offered by them is lower than E Loan’s. What do you think?
