American Express SimplyCashSM Business Card I’ve been researching ways to save money on gas, since gas where I live costs me $3.50+/gallon.

Using gas credit cards when filling up can save you a lot of money.

    In terms of gas rebates, you might be better off with the Citi professional card…it is 3% back on everything, so you could use it during those business lunch meetings and likely come out ahead over the Amex.

    Actually, there are two really bad ideas the one statement above. Here’s why:

    (1) Personal cards have many more build-in protections since consumers vote (and politicians pander to voters/consumers) than business cards. With a personal card your liability is limited to $50 based on Federal Law.

    (2) The IRS will gladly provide an EIN even to sole proprietors) which can offer great protection against identity theft that is more likely when you make SSN more public.

    Since may of those who posted above have not actually experienced AMEX Terms and Conditions and paying AMEX fees, I would caution everyone to closely watch your monthly bill from AMEX every step of the way. They can be very clever in how they choose to deceive their customers.

    The terms and conditions (but not the advertising) show that some of the AMEX cards only pay 5% back after $6500 of “qualified charges” each year.

    Waited since feb for my 10000 points reward, called 4 times always got the runaround ,Every time I called I had to explain the promotion ,they act like they are not familiar with any promotions. I finally became disgusted and cancelled my card.Citi bank card on the other hand rewarded me in about two weeks.

    Where did you hear about there being a 10000 points rewards? I believe the promotion you are talking about is the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card

    Here is the catch - you won’t get 5% back on gas if the vendor lists their charges as “auto services” instead of “gas” Only two of my fill ups last year showed up as gas - the rest - approximately 8 - were billed under “auto services” and I only got 1.5% back from them. Of course there is no way to know this when you are filling up.

    If you do pay at the pump the chances are pretty good that it should show up as a gas purchase. Not so when you pay inside.

    This is a really good deal, although the problem with gas cards seems to be acceptability. As with the BP 10% off card (see here http://www.bankaholic.com/2006/10-off-bp-gas-with-chase-visa-card/ ) you will need to know whether most of the garages take the card. The solution could be to have a number of credit cards (although watch for annual fees).

    This is not a comment this is a commercial. But rebate cards are nice as I’ve always used them. However read the fine print. Every rebate card I’ve ever owned starts out at 3%-5% back on certain purchases and 1% on all other purchases.

    Then in 1 - 2 years it mysteriously becomes only 1% on everything. Crazy how that happens.
