Anyone can get a little jingle in their pockets to help pay holiday bills if they open a free checking account at GTE Financial Credit Union.
The credit union, based in Tampa, Fla., is offering a $100 bonus if you open a Free Checking or U22 Checking account by Jan. 31.
To earn the bonus, you’ll also have to sign up for direct deposit of your paycheck, log onto online banking and receive eStatements.
And you don’t have to be a resident of the Tampa Bay area to join GTE Financial. The offer is available to anyone who doesn’t currently have a checking account with the credit union.
Free Checking charges no account fees and has no minimum balance requirements, while the U22 Checking account is available to anyone between the ages of 12 and 22, and has special features such as allowing parents to monitor the account online.
But don’t choose one of these accounts if you’re looking to earn money on your deposits. The maximum rate is 0.15% APY.
U22 Checking also carries an additional bonus — a $25 account credit for using your debit card once, logging on to mobile banking and online banking, and setting up an account balance alert.
To earn the $100 bonus, open the account by the end of January, then set up payroll direct deposits, log onto online banking and set up eStatements by Feb. 28. If you do that, the bonus should land in your account by March 31.
These accounts include free access to more than 28,000 ATMs throughout the United States. Any ATM that is part of the CO-OP Network is free.
Credit union membership is open to anyone. The typical field of membership is residents of much of the Tampa Bay area, those who work for certain companies or those whose relative is a member. But you can also become a member by joining GTE Financial’s nonprofit financial club, CUSavers.
There’s a one-time membership fee of $10, which the credit union will pay for you.
You can either apply for membership online (www.gtefinancial.org) or stop by one of the credit union’s 21 branches in the greater Tampa Bay area.
